Undergrounding for Visual Amenity – Lake District National Park

Undergrounding for Visual Amenity – Lake District National Park

During an 8 month period in 2016, GLA worked right across the Lake District completing a comprehensive survey and assessment for the Lake District National Park Authority and Electricity North West. This covered the extent of the National Park, identifying overhead lines that are causing adverse visual effects within the National Park. The information collected was then entered into a Geographical Information System (GIS) which informed the prioritisation of those lines which would result in the greatest benefit to the landscape should they be undergrounded using the available funding.

We have worked on a number of hotels in and around the Lake District and this is a good example of our design work.

This included the design of the frontage of this high profile hotel on main tourist route in the heart of the Lake District on the edge of Lake Windermere.

Survey, design and site supervision of site works including step design, seating, planting and drainage.

Hotel improvements carried out on site in the spring of 2014.

The creation of recreational routes in the heart of the Lake District using government funding through the Lake District National Park Authority. This was part of the wider work in the national park for transport and recreation routes as the Lake District moves towards becoming a World Heritage Site.

The visualisations shown in the images were displayed at local consultations and prepared using digital terrain modelling and accurate photography techniques. The use of canoe (as well as camera) was essential for one photo!
